TUMULT FESTIVAL 2025

För andra året kommer Öjerviks gård i Rottneros att leva upp under tre dagar, sista helgen i juni kommer musik från världens alla hörn att rulla ut över nejderna.

Idén till festivalen blommade upp i vännerna Nils Wikland och Christians huvuden för sex år sedan, genom många musikdiskussioner och utlandsresor till andra festivaler. Med oro över vad som är modernt, vad som är tidlöst, vad musikens roll och potential är i denna globala värld, vad Sverige betyder för allt detta, framkom ett massivt inkluderande och skarpt koncept. Men det var inte förrän de träffade Mats Horn och hans otroliga sekelgamla gård i hjärtat av Sverige som allt smälte samman.

Too often do we see events playing it a little safe, booking artists that have already proven and established themselves abroad. This means it can be difficult to seize the zeitgeist. For a festival named Tumult, living in this stirring age, we strive for that, we feel that the world needs a little more of Sweden, and vice versa, reducing distance between foreign cultures that can sometime feel like more remote than they actually are, or can be. So we’re bringing the world to its timeless heartland, the kind of place that too often gets turned into a cultural no mans land, when there’s no big city around!
Last year’s first edition was a blueprint of things to come, an ambitious free-thinking event meant to be cross-generational, welcoming artists and guests both unafraid of the present. With our modest means, Tumult hosted performances from artists hailing from Greece, Belgium, Jordan, Tunisia, the UK, France, Uruguay, Denmark, and Sweden.

This year, we expand further away from the old western world, with modern and timeless acts hailing from Egypt, Congo, Syria, Kenya, Réunion, Brazil, Uganda, Indonesia, but also Portugal, Ukraine, Canada, Greece, Belgium, the UK, France, Australia, Germany, Austria, and Scandinavia. This is now a three-day event, so far self-funded, put together with the help of a vast community of friends, built over a decade of smaller events around Sweden and Europe, an utopia that we are turning into reality, energized by the enthusiasm the first edition was met with.

Tumult is on a human scale, as we want both the artists and attendees to feel as much as part of a loose community as possible. No big stage with barriers and security between the musicians and the audience, no VIP tickets, if you want to go chat up the artists, if you brought your instruments and want to jam, feel free to ask, this is an event tailored for the meeting of minds and people. In this spirit, a free camping place is available on site, in a field sprinkled with millennial Viking graves, but a gorgeous and massive hotel spa is also located a mere 10 mn away, with quite a few AirBnB opportunities around. A variety of food trucks, canteens and beverage spots will also be available from noon to late in the evening, if not even later.

Now that we bring the world to Sweden, what does it bring with?

Lord Spikeheart probably is the leading heavy metal artist of the African continent. Going solo after the success of his Kenyan days with Duma, he infuses elements of industrial, noise, trap, hip hop, and Kenyan music in his take on extreme metal, and you’ve never seen anything like it, currently making him a true festival’s darling!

The Handover is an open-ended take on Egyptian traditional music, as Oud master Aly Eissa invites other musicians from around the world to create a trance like music that both feels hyper modern and timeless.
Jazz meets the middle east meets electronic music, all in a great psychedelic experience.

Titi Bakorta and Jako Maron unite their talents for an exclusive fusion of modernist Congolese pop folk and the most cutting-edge electronic incarnation of maloya, the traditional music of the Réunion Island in the Pacific ocean. After meetings and improvised collaborations through their Ugandan label Nyege Nyege Tapes, their unheard brand of modern African fusion brings us directly into the future!

Even is the first collaboration between two major names of the European underground, both hailing from Greece. Sissi Rada is one of the leading harpists in modern music, removing it from its classical frame with great instincts, while Jay Glass Dubs has brought dubstep into its rawest and most elegiacal forms. The result is a mesmerizing haze of dream pop, with obvious cues to dub, electronic music, and post punk, the current destination of a path that started with The Cocteau Twins, My Bloody Valentine, and Seefeel.

Christer Bothén is a legend of Swedish jazz, and one of the all-time masters of clarinet bass. He also was one of jazz legend Don Cherry, in his early travels to western Africa, learning the local music and instruments. In a sort of homage to Don, with the help of his disciple Kansan Zetterberg, he will present a rare Donso n’Goni concert – an African Luth-harp that is also a drum – but also traveling back and forth to jazz, a truly unique celebration of multi-culture.

Back in the early 2010’s, something truly unique happened to electronic dance music, with Principe : this new Portuguese label embraced its Angolan post colonial culture, showcasing rhythms practically unheard of in the club. With a heavy focus on syncopation, unpolished drum sounds, and a groove that brought together Angolan Kuduro with the rawest techno of Berghain, a small group of producers changed the Zeitgeist. First with DJ Niggafox, but now with Lycox, its current most energetic incarnation, an accomplished musician and DJ whose productions feel like the pulse of dancing world.

Mike York and Steve Davis are one of the most unlikely of meetings. The latter is a snooker legend, multi time world champion, an extremely popular figure in the UK (and world) culture, but also an avid music lover. Together with Mike York and Kavus Torabi (current Gong leader), they form The Utopia Strong, an supergroup dedicated to true psychedelic music, through the use of analog electronics and various devices, including treated wind instruments, which Mike has become a scholar of. This led him to become a member of legendary industrial acts such as Coil and Current 93, but his connection with Steve (on electronics) is where we think he shines the brightest!

What is jazz? SO SNER is one of those rare projects that successfully challenges our acceptance of a century old music genre. Here, Vienna based Susanna Gartmayer bass clarinet scrutinizes the entire sound universe – rhythm, drone, melody, noise, often all at once – while Dusseldörf’s Stefan Schneider’s minimalist rhythms and subtle cosmic exploration bring a post-punk ethos, informed by his Mapstation electronic project, and his acclaimed post Krautrock bands Kreidler and To Rococo Rot. The stunning result is this breathy sensual physical experience, rooted in soul and synth, jazz and industrial, avant-garde and polyrhythm, in the tradition of some of Krautrock legends Cluster’s 80ies experimentations, a band Stefan has collaborated with on numerous occasions.
Darlings of the underground dancefloor, Canadians PLO Man & DJ Spence strike a rare balance between weirdo house and classic old school techno, sprinkled by a more experimental essence of electronica. At the helm of the traditional music and Doo labels, they constantly defy expectations, effortlessly pushing our acceptance of what dance music can be, while remaining true to the core basics of the club’s physicality.

Multi-instrumentalist Annelies Monseré has been a central figure of the Belgian underground for over 20 years. But since she ‘discovered’ her otherworldly voice, vocals became a main focus. Folk and early music are at the core of her sound, but the palette of piano, organ, bass guitar, cello, synth and drum machine make it very much a document of the here and now! As Hydromedusae with Jessica Bailiff, and her Luster band, Annelies gained further acclaim, but her solo shines as its own complete world, with its own rules : When she starts singing, the world stands still, bringing you into a timeless and spiritual trance like state.

UK and Australia Arianne Churchman & Benedict Drew’s music is a deeply psychedelic journey through folk magic and theory fiction, delving into the pagan folklore and mysteries of trees and woods, searching for future possibilities. Through a tapestry of harmonium, analogue synthesizers, acoustic instruments and layered voice, we enter this new world of the left hand, and its visions. This world represents a dream space where everything is reversed and nothing is quite as we know it. We venture through this dream, inhaling its new scent and air, unfolding new traditional music, new histories, visions and possibilities of being. Just imagine if the Wicker Man movie had a happy ending!

With his partner in bagpipes Enora Morice, jester in chief Jazz Lambaux offers his own fantasy of TV-fed third millennial suburban America, an elegy for a demographic with little-to-no property ownership prospects, entangled in a never-ending culture war and a meaningless consumption race – a meager solace for a generation raised on Green Day’s American Idiot and Marilyn Manson’s Portrait Of An American Family. But the Mountain Dew-fueled Punchinello is smarter than he’s willing to pretend. Punctuated by post-modern vignettes echoing Ol’ Dirty Bastard and Eminem’s own deranged comedy skits, he conjures the dizzying junk of US teenagealia, touched by the grace of MTV-friendly gods, and Tori Amos’ mainstream avant-garde heydays. Ecstatic pop songs on steroids bath in that same hyperreal uncanniness that blossomed in the mid-00’s through works like Gregg Araki’s Kaboom, Richard Linklater’s A Scanner Darkly or Korn’s Twisted Transistor video… A trip through America’s guilt, led by a French cousin of the Pied Piper of Hamelin.

Hailing from Brazil, but a true citizen of the world, Gloria De Oliveira’s music is a masterful exercise in hiding venom on the thorns of a rose. A trained opera singer and international actress (Babylon Berlin!), her whole career highlights the duality we all have, but she dares expose hers. After a collaboration with David Lynch-protégé and sound designer Dean Hurley, she’s now embarked on a journey merging her south American musical roots with the myths of the old world : a mix of dream pop, electronics, Bossa Nova, and Fado, with tons of cinematographic cues, she could very well be the musical bride of Zé do Caixão, by way of Jean Rollin and Werner Herzog.

Damascus-born DJ and visual artist Lazergazer was recommended to us by one of last year’s edition stars, Jordan club-hero Toumba. That alone did not suffice to put her on the bill, but after hearing her techno, breaks, electro, Middle Eastern filled Boiler Room set, things were quickly put into motion. Is Syria on her mind, when she crafts powerful bass lines and driving percussions to captivate the mind and stir the soul of her audience? We want to believe so, because we feel it so! Immersed in the depths of human emotion, her compositions resonate with raw passion, igniting a fire throughout her sets, a clash of culture born from a tumultuous young world that holds no certainties, besides crafting the most ”now” club music!

Grounding up this celebrated gathering of disruptive creative minds is an exciting assortment of local and exotic talents, with emerging and accomplished bands, DJs and performers such as Picasso (UK), Dingo Tracks (AU), Karine & Shakolin (UA), Ary Craike (ID), Stunty (FR), Antoine (FR), and Primula, Relax, Johnny Devils, Nick O’Konnor/Nitram Gnilk, Korpi & Klovvik, Flord King & Morganismen, Daniel Lien, Relax, OOOUUU, Manfred, LFO2, Filliamhotpicks, Poängen, Sissela Broos, Tonotopi, Achtung Internet all representing the homeland, Sweden!

TUMULT Year2 is bound to be an incredible, thoughtful and disruptive experience, one that should change the local culture’s fabric of reality’s DNA, with goals to step by step go beyond the realms of music, welcoming different kinds of visual artists and performers, as much as we can, which is one of the many reasons we need you to put the word out, to make this into a sustainable creative summit, and not just an feverish utopia. We believe in ourselves, and we believe in you!
